For six months, our family and the Herington community have walked the trails, shared missing persons posts, and held our breath waiting for James Cole to come home after he went missing on August 31st, 2025. The morning of March 6th, 2026, our search has come to a heartbreaking end. While James is no longer with us, he is finally back in our care.
James was a man of quiet strength, steady heart, and appreciated the simple things in life. It wasn't uncommon after a hard day's work at the grain elevator for James to unwind by listening to his favorite bands (such as Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, and Supertramp), cook himself a juicy steak, and end the night by gaming with his friends and family. He loved the open air of Kansas and the peaceful rhythm of the Flint Hills. He made his own walking stick and brought it with him when he frequently hiked the Flint Hills Nature Trail. James even went with his cousins rafting down the Smokey Hill River.
We are now faced with the difficult task of saying a final goodbye. As we navigate this profound, sudden loss, we are asking for your support to help the Cole family cover the costs of his cremation and celebration of life due to the unexpected expenses from these past few months.
The family thanks each and every person who helped with the search, spreading awareness, and prayers.
