With broken hearts, we share the sudden passing of Hopena Pokipala, a devoted husband, son, brother, and friend. At just 30 years old, Hopena’s life was tragically cut short, leaving behind his beloved wife Allie Chu, his family, and an entire community who cherished him.
Hopena, an avid longshoreman, aspiring politician, big wave surfer, and devoted husband, will be remembered most for his heart. A true "Mr. Aloha" in every sense, he was known for his big smile, generosity, and the aloha he carried into every interaction. To know him was to feel supported, uplifted, and loved. His passing leaves an immeasurable void, but also a lasting legacy of kindness, ambition, and joy.
As the Pokipala, Chu, and Botelho 'ohana grieve, they are also faced with the unexpected financial burden of laying Hopena to rest and managing life in the weeks and months to come. We are raising $30,000 to help cover:
* Funeral and celebration of life costs
* Immediate needs for Hopena's family, his wife Allie, and their business, Oysters Hawaii, as they navigate this profound loss
* Establishing Hopena's legacy fund

Allie and Hopena had the incredible foresight to plan for their future together, including preserving the possibility of growing their family. Hopena, who loved the ocean, will be returned to its embrace. For those who wish to attend, a celebration of life to scatter his ashes among the waves will be held on Sunday, Oct 12 at 10am at 1038 Mōkūlua Dr, Kailua. Please note that limited parking is available at Lanikai Park.
