My Mom, Elizabeth Jean (née White) Katsaros, was born 69 years ago 12/16/1951, and transitioned into the afterlife 20 years ago, Jan 20, 2001. She was committed to social justice, and shaped me to be who I am today (see her wearing a shirt about how Columbus couldn't have discovered this land because millions of Native people were already living here). In 1992, she also donated $50 to a Native group in Minnesota buying back land, which purchased .25 an acre. Her modeling and early teaching inspires me to do the advocacy work and collaboration today around changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day!

In her honor and memory, I'm raising money for a Native woman who's middle name is also Elizabeth. She is getting her Undergraduate degree to become a History Teacher, and is an amazing social justice advocate and educator. Her scholarship to support people of color who want to become teachers ended, so she owes the University $9K, and will need more to finish her degree.

I have already donated $1K directly, AND will cover ALL the fees that GoFundMe charges (2.9%+$0.30 per donation) so that 100% of your contributions will go directly to my friend's tuition.

When my Mom had breast cancer (1997-2001), twice she rode 500 miles on her bicycle from Minneapolis to Chicago, raising thousands of dollars each year for non-profits that supported people with HIV/AIDS. After she died, in 2003, I raised about $8,500 for Gilda's Club in Brooklyn, a non-profit that supported people with cancer and friends/family of people with cancer/or who had lost someone to cancer.  It's been quite a long time since I've tried to raise a significant amount of money...but I thought it was time to try again.

No matter what you can manage...every small amount will be appreciated. Contributing to this woman's education feels like a small act of anti-racism and solidarity. I hope you'll join me, in honoring my Mom's legacy, and supporting this woman to be able to become the amazing educator I know she'll be, and that students need!
