Honoring the Life and Legacy of Edgardo
It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved partner, Edgardo.
For so many people throughout Puerto Rico and beyond, Edgardo was a leader, mentor, artist, Deaf interpreter, educator, and advocate. To me, he was a loving partner, a source of strength, and the person who dedicated his life to helping others.
Edgardo believed deeply in the potential of every person. He was especially passionate about supporting Deaf youth and helping them discover their talents, pursue their dreams, and recognize their worth. In 1992, he founded the Teatro de Jóvenes Sordos Puertorriqueños, creating opportunities for young Deaf individuals to develop confidence, creativity, and leadership through the performing arts. Through his guidance, countless lives were transformed.
His commitment to the Deaf community extended far beyond the theater. As a founding member and vice president of Servicios Orientados al Sordo, Inc., he taught, mentored, and inspired hundreds of individuals. Many of his students went on to become interpreters, advocates, educators, and leaders, carrying forward the values he worked so hard to instill.
Edgardo was also a person of action. After Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, he worked tirelessly to ensure Deaf community members had access to food, water, and essential supplies. He refused to let anyone be forgotten during one of the island’s most difficult times.
Those who knew Edgardo knew his generous spirit, his unwavering dedication to service, and his ability to inspire hope in others. He dreamed of a more inclusive world and spent his life turning that vision into reality.
As I navigate this unimaginable loss, I am asking for support to help cover funeral and memorial expenses and the unexpected costs that come with saying goodbye to someone so deeply loved. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease this burden and allow us to honor Edgardo’s life in a way that reflects the tremendous impact he had on so many.
If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping our family and loved ones in your thoughts.
Thank you for your kindness, support, and for helping us celebrate the life and legacy of Edgardo. His love, compassion, and dedication to the Deaf community will never be forgotten.
With gratitude,
Ricky
