My name is Shanell, and I am raising funds to give my son, DuWayne Shonte Simmons Sr., the funeral and burial he deserves. DuWayne was my third son out of seven children, and even though he was the middle child, he was always the big brother. He cooked for his brothers, kept them together during tough times, and taught them everything he learned. His presence was the glue that held our family close, and his loss has left a deep void in our hearts.
DuWayne’s passing was sudden and heartbreaking. He was found at the park off 35th Avenue and Campbell on June 5th. As we wait for answers, our family is trying to come together to honor his memory in a way that reflects the love and strength he gave us. We hope to have a funeral and a repass, and to release doves at the cemetery as we lay his body to rest. These traditions are important to us and will help us say goodbye surrounded by family and friends.
DuWayne overcame so much in his life. After losing his father, DuWayne Earl Simmons, to violence in 2010, he still graduated from high school and became a general manager at Wendy’s and Jack in the Box. He was a devoted father to three children—DuWayne Jr., Josiah, and Nyla—and volunteered with my social club, The Lady Ballerz, to help fathers in need. Your support will help us cover funeral and burial expenses, and allow us to honor DuWayne’s legacy as a loving son, father, and community member.
