Honoring Dr. David Sufian Through the Yiddish Vinkel of Houston
We are raising funds in honor of Dr. David (דוד פּרץ) Sufian (z”l) for an organization he loved dearly: the Yiddish Vinkel of Houston.

The Yiddish Vinkel is a warm and welcoming group that meets weekly to sing, read, and converse in Yiddish. More than a language group, it is a space where people come together to celebrate the richness of Yiddish culture, history, music, and tradition. The group is open to anyone with an interest in Yiddish, regardless of fluency or background. It embodies everything David cherished: community, learning, humor, and soulful connection to Jewish roots.

The Yiddish Vinkel does not currently have a donation link on its website, so we created this GoFundMe as a way for those who would prefer to donate electronically—rather than by check—to support the group in David’s memory.

About Dr. David Sufian
David Paul Sufian, D.O., F.A.C.O.S., passed away on June 4, 2025, at the age of 90 in Houston, Texas. Born in Brownsville, Brooklyn in 1935 to Lithuanian, Yiddish-speaking immigrants, Yiddish was David’s first language and remained a deep part of his identity. His love for the language and its culture remained strong throughout his life.

Dr. Sufian was a trailblazing cardiovascular thoracic surgeon, a dedicated educator, and a lifelong learner. From playing cello at Carnegie Hall to training under Dr. Michael DeBakey, from serving as a medic in the Korean War to teaching paramedics in Peru, he brought curiosity, compassion, and excellence to everything he did. He was a gifted doctor, teacher, musician, builder, and community member. And above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend.

David’s life was one of service—to his patients, his students, his family, and his community. Even in his final years, he continued to give thanks to every person who cared for him, and he remained actively engaged in the things he loved, especially Jewish learning and Yiddish culture. The Yiddish Vinkel brought him joy, belonging, and connection. Supporting it is one of the most meaningful ways we can carry his memory forward.
