Honoring Dr. Castro’s Legacy in Pediatrics

For Dr. Adriana M. Castro, medicine has never been just a career; it has been a masterclass in breaking barriers and nurturing the next generation. Dr. Castro did not just practice medicine; she led it. Her career is defined by historic firsts that opened doors for others. During her eight years as the Chief of Pediatrics at Baptist Hospital, she made history as the first Latina to lead any department in the hospital’s history. She was one of the first pediatricians to join TopLine MD, recognizing the power of physician-led networks and she set the gold standard for clinical excellence by becoming the first pediatrician in Miami to achieve PCMH certification, proving that her private practice was more than a clinic—it was a sanctuary of coordinated, high-quality care.

For over thirty years in private practice, Dr. Castro was the steady hand for thousands of Miami families. She saw children grow into parents, who then brought their own babies back to her for the same trusted care. She balanced this immense professional weight while raising four children of her own alongside her husband. This dual residency in motherhood and medicine gave her a unique empathy; she didn't just provide medical advice, she offered mother-to-mother wisdom that resonated deeply with her patients.

To know Dr. Castro is also to know her quirks and her passions. While she commanded boardrooms and neonatal units, she also found joy in the simple things, most notably her love for penguins. Much like the birds she adores, she is known for her resilience, her loyalty to her colony, and her ability to find grace in even the coldest climates. Though her retirement in May 2025 at the age of 63 was a loss for the medical community, her spirit remains as vibrant as ever. Even now, she continues to teach us about dignity and the profound value of a life well-lived. She fought to ensure that the future is bright, equitable, and led with love. We now humbly ask for your support, prayers and thoughts for her recovery.
