On October 4th, 2025, Anthony went to check on Dorothy and realized she had been on the floor, unresponsive. (She sleeps in her recliner.)
They immediately called emergency personnel and got Dorothy into the local hospital (Amery, WI).
While admitted, they did some extensive testing and realized she had to be airlifted to Region’s Hospital in St. Paul, MN.
Upon arrival, Dorothy was immediately booked into the OR (operating room) because the doctors had realized her bowels had a blockage (dead end) within her small intestines.
The team expressed their concern for putting her under (85% chance she wasn’t gonna make it), and she beat the odds. However, they didn’t close up her wounds; they left a vacuum in her stomach until she was stable enough to close it.
The surgeon ended up removing almost 5ft from her small intestines. (THAT’S IMPRESSIVE.)
Dorothy was put on a substantial amount of life support machines, one for her blood pressure and the other for breathing.
Throughout her hospital stay at Region’s, it was an up and down progression and regression experience.
On October 6th, 2025, Dorothy encountered her second surgery to check on her incision. While in there, they checked everything out, removed additional “dead ends,” and closed her up. (Again, Dorothy beating all odds.)
She remained on the SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) floor until she progressed.
By October 8th, 2025, Dorothy again proved against all odds, her team of doctors, and achieved the milestones she needed to remove the ventilator and be transferred to a different floor. During this timeframe, we had cherished a bit of Dorothy’s attitude and conversations. (We had hope!)
On October 9th, 2025, tables turned drastically, hard decisions had to be made, and Dorothy’s wires were all removed because she was transferred to “comfort care,” which is considered hospice.
The last day, Dorothy was surrounded by her loved ones and went to be with Jesus on October 10th, 2025.
Due to this being so unexpected, we’re desperately needing to cover the remaining expenses. Dorothy had prepared for this day many years ago. But what wasn’t factored in was the cost of the funeral she requested and the inflation over the years. Our goal is to reach $5,000 to cover the bare minimum of what Dorothy was requesting.
Dorothy received around-the-clock care from Renee (her daughter) and Anthony (her grandson) due to her becoming completely blind, limited mobility, diabetes, and dementia.
They will now need to find new jobs and find a new way to navigate through life without having Dorothy.
If you’re able to donate anything, that would be more than appreciated. If you’re unable to, please don’t worry. The only thing we’re asking for is to share our posts, keep the algorithm flowing to shed as much light as we’re able to on this.
If you’d rather donate through alternative options, please feel free to do so.
Just add in the note, for Dorothy.
