We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Diodone, a 17-year-old who came to North Carolina seeking safety, hope, and a chance for a better future.
Diodone’s journey was far from easy. After fleeing his home in Burundi with his family, he lived for many years in a refugee camp in Tanzania.
He and 9 members of his family earned refugee status and came to the US in January 2025.
He worked hard to adjust to a new life here — learning English, attending school, and continuing to overcome many physical challenges. He was frequently seen walking to the grocery store to pick up something for his mom or accompanying his nieces and nephews on a walk to the park.
Tragically, Diodone passed away unexpectedly on October 14. His sudden loss has left his family and community heartbroken. In the US, he leaves behind his mother, 2 siblings, and 6 nieces and nephews, as well as a community of friends.
In addition to their deep grief, they now face the overwhelming burden of funeral and burial expenses — costs that are far beyond their means.
We are reaching out to our friends, neighbors, and compassionate community members to ask for your support.
Every donation will go directly to paying expenses to help Diodone’s family give him a dignified farewell and find a measure of peace during this painful time.
If you are unable to contribute financially, please consider sharing this message and keeping Diodone and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for helping to honor the memory of a young life taken too soon — and for reminding this grieving family that they are not alone.
❤️ We appreciate your compassion and support.
