Our coworker, friend, and truly one of our family members experienced an unimaginable loss. Janine’s 28-year-old son, Connor, passed away unexpectedly after suffering a sudden brain bleed. In the coming days, Connor will remain in the ICU while he gives the gift of life through organ donation, a final act of generosity that reflects the kind of person he was.

After this, Janine and her family will face the difficult reality of cremation costs, funeral arrangements, and time away from work to grieve and support one another. Like many first responder families, they live on a modest income and do not have life insurance to help cover these unexpected expenses.

This loss is especially heavy for Janine and her family. In 2015, Connor’s father, John Mackey, was killed in the line of duty here in our county. Ten years ago, Janine found the strength to hold her family together while grieving the loss of her husband. Now she faces another devastating loss while continuing to support her teenage children and navigate grief once again.

Janine has always been someone who shows up for others without hesitation for her coworkers, her community, and her family. Now it is our turn to show up for her.

We are asking for support to help ease the financial burden during this incredibly difficult time. Donations will go toward funeral and cremation expenses, household needs during bereavement leave, and supporting the family as they begin to heal.
