On May 16th, 2025, our dear friend Collin Smith passed away in a sailing accident in Madison, Wisconsin. Collin was so special — funny, kind, and a true friend to so many of us. His spirit lives on through his family and all who were lucky enough to know him. We miss him deeply.

Those who knew Collin knew how important his time at Carleton College was to him — it’s where he thrived as a student and it’s where he found many of his closest friends. Collin loved Carleton and found solace in its beautiful arboretum and other green spaces around campus.

To honor his memory, we are raising funds to plant a catalpa tree—his favorite species—on campus, overlooking Bell Field. We appreciate any support you’re able to offer as we collect donations for this memorial.

We will be collecting donations until June 25th, 2026 and hope to have a small ceremony when the tree is planted in September 2026.
