I Am, the Ever-Present Cooling Mist at the Falls. I belong to the Wy-am-pum, the “Echo of the Water off the Rocks at the Falls People.” My people belong to the falls. But I am the last of the Wy’am as having aboriginal title. I need your help to tell our true story of ( Tananma) The People
This is a race against time as I get older and my line is near gone
Many books have been written about the Columbia River Bands of Indians and how our ancient fishing sites were lost due to the flooding of Celilo falls by the Dam. But they have not been written by the Indians. Our voice has been drowned out in the same way as the falls, in the same way that we have lost our traditions and way of life, forced on to the reservations and city’s. The Wy-am are not federally recognized as a tribe because we would not settle , take a number nor the $$. We continue to fight to this day, but it is a lonely fight as I am the last Wy-am on site, unenrolled with one of the four tribes whom fish this pool called zone six
Supported by my ancestors, my great grandmother Minnie, and Chief Tommy Thompson, I visited the Seattle National archives, their spirits with me and I sang a washut song. I really thought I knew a few things about my history, but my discoveries and findings will tell a different story . I walked away with thousands of documents so full of the truth. I must tell this truth and all should hear the great work of my ancestors. I must tell this story in our words.
I need your help and support to produce the book. Funding is needed for transcription, production, paper and ink, and the time I must dedicate so that I can write it. More research. Please help me to tell our story, to tell the truth, to tell how we fought, how we won and how we lost, and how I and my ancestors still fight for justice.
