Caitlin Unterman was a daughter, a sister, a pseudo auntie to many, an equestrian, a scientist, a science teacher, a trainer/coach, and a friend to countless people across the US. Her life was taken suddenly and tragically at only 35 years old, leaving behind more than 12 horses, 4 dogs, ducks, chickens, pigs, and other animals. Caitlin’s passing has left a void in the lives of her family, friends, and the many animals she cared for with unwavering devotion.
Caitlin lived with her whole heart. She loved deeply, gave endlessly, and expected nothing in return. Whether you knew her as a friend, a trainer, a teacher, a scientist, or simply as “the horse girl,” you knew someone whose kindness, intelligence, and compassion were simply unmatched. Horses were never just a hobby to Caitlin—they were part of who she was. She had an extraordinary gift for understanding them, earning their trust, and helping others do the same. Her barn wasn’t just a place to ride; it was a place where people found encouragement, friendship, laughter, and home. Her love didn’t stop with horses. Caitlin never met an animal she wouldn’t fight for. Her home and heart were always open, and the countless animals she cared for were family to her. Every one of them was loved fiercely and cared for with a level of devotion that only Caitlin could give.
Outside the barn, Caitlin was an incredibly talented scientist, science teacher, and trainer/coach whose brilliance was matched only by her humility. She never sought recognition for the difference she made. She simply showed up every day determined to make the world a little better—whether that meant helping a colleague, mentoring someone new, comforting a friend, or rescuing an animal that needed her. This fundraiser is being published at the request of and with the permission of Matthew Unterman, Caitlin’s brother, who will ultimately receive and manage any funds raised. The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward caring for Caitlin’s beloved animals and supporting her funeral services.
