On December 19th, 2025, our East Aurora community and basketball family suffered a heartbreaking loss: Bertha, the beloved aunt and guardian of Diego Barcenas, passed away suddenly. Bertha opened her home—and her heart—to Diego. She brought him to East Aurora, worked multiple jobs, and did whatever it took—nights, early mornings, weekends—to provide safety, opportunity, and love. Bertha’s devotion helped shape Diego into the remarkable young man we know today.

Diego is a standout player for East Aurora Boys Basketball, Co-president of East Aurora’s Unified Basketball Team, an active DECA member, nearing completion of his Eagle Scout award, a fixture at the Boys and Girls club, and is preparing to graduate from East Aurora High School this June. Anyone who has ever met Diego recognizes the amazing individual he has become, thanks in no small part to his aunt Bertha.

Bertha’s passing leaves Diego and their family facing unexpected funeral expenses and pressing needs as he continues his education, athletics, and service to our community. The East Aurora Boys Basketball Boosters has volunteered to coordinate this fundraising effort and will distribute 100% of the funds to Diego and his family.
