Thank you all for your generous support of my dad’s funeral. In his honor, if you were planning to contribute, please consider supporting Ms Shin as she bravely battles cancer. ❤️
If you'd like to learn a little about my hero:
Ben Masanobu Arai, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and Marine, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in Oregon, Ben's early years were marked by resilience and injustice, having been incarcerated at the Minidoka Concentration Camp during World War II. After the war, he was raised in Los Angeles and later became a proud United States Marine. Ben earned his law degree and became a Civil Rights attorney, dedicated to representing the disabled, immigrants, and Indigenous peoples. He was a fierce advocate for justice, protesting against genocide and unjust wars, and believed in reparations and solidarity among communities.
Ben's life was filled with passion and love. He was a black belt in Kodokan Judo, enjoyed playing the ukulele, and was a fan of the Yankees. He loved exploring global cuisines and cherished the rhythm of life in New York City. Above all, he loved his family deeply. He is survived by his wife Elena, daughters Nadeshda and Natalia, grandchildren, and his loyal granddog, Tyler, along with extended family.
We are raising funds to cover the expenses for a dignified funeral in The Bronx, a meal at his favorite Chinese restaurant, and a special cremation ceremony where his ashes will be scattered around the Statue of Liberty. This tribute reflects Ben's life and values, honoring his legacy of love, strength, and service. Your support will help us give Ben the farewell he deserves, celebrating a life lived with conviction and compassion.
