This past year has brought more loss than our family ever imagined. Six months ago, we lost my dad, Rick Platzer, to cancer, and this past Sunday, we lost my brother, Adam 'Pep' Platzer, to mental illness.
My mom (Dee Ann), sister (Kelsey), and I (Sarah) live in Colorado, and both losses have required us to travel back to Minnesota to handle arrangements, homes, celebrations of life, and ongoing responsibilities and expenses. While we were able to make it through the expenses related to my dad, our resources are now stretched thin, and the costs associated with caring for Adam’s affairs will significantly impact us.
It was clear that Adam was struggling with his mental health, and as a result, his home requires extensive cleaning, repairs, and maintenance before it can be sold. Managing these unexpected costs, along with travel, time away from work, pet care, and end‑of‑life expenses, has created a heavy financial strain during an already devastating time.
As we eventually return home, we will continue to carry this grief with us while trying to heal and regain some sense of stability. Having financial security during this period would allow us the space to grieve without the added pressure of immediate financial hardship.
Any support will help us focus on honoring Adam and on taking care of each other as we navigate this incredibly difficult chapter. Thank you for your kindness, whether through donating or sharing our story.
