It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Aaron Vincent Willis (born November 14, 1998), a beloved son, brother, and an enduring symbol of resilience for his community.
Aaron’s story is woven into the very fabric of Miami. A true local at heart, he grew up playing as a young athlete for the Overtown Optimist football team, attended Phillis Wheatley Elementary, and moved on to Jose De Diego Middle School. Many first met Aaron in 2012, when a senseless act of violence changed his life. While that day left him paralyzed, it never broke his spirit. Aaron became a national inspiration when he walked across the stage at his Booker T. Washington High School graduation using a robotic exoskeleton—proving to the world that his determination had no limits.
Beyond his public story of survival, Aaron was a man of rare depth. From a very early age, he possessed an "old soul," engaging in intelligent conversations with adults that were far beyond his years. He had a natural gift for building bonds across different cultures and backgrounds; to Aaron, no one was a stranger for long. Those who were lucky enough to call him a friend had a friend for life.
At the time of his passing, Aaron was a proud student at Florida International University (FIU), pursuing a degree in Education. His dream was to become a school counselor, returning to the same school system that raised him to mentor students through their own challenges.
Aaron has now been reunited with his father, Sammie Willis, who preceded him in death. He leaves behind his devoted mother, Katherine Willis, and his brother, Pierre Beaton, who were his pillars of strength.
We are reaching out to the community Aaron loved to help us honor his journey.
Your donations will go directly toward:
• Funeral and memorial service costs to provide Aaron the dignified farewell he deserves.
• Support for his mother Katherine as they navigate the financial burdens of this sudden transition.
• Preserving Aaron’s legacy of resilience, unity, and education.
Aaron wasn't just a survivor; he was a bridge-builder, a scholar, and a light in the lives of everyone he touched. Thank you for your prayers, your stories of Aaron, and your generosity.
With gratitude,
The Willis Families
