Aaron Babila was a South Bay skateboarder whose passion and talent left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him. We probably heard about Aaron Babila because some crazy trick or crazy spot and then found out it was switch! Aaron was a skateboarding encyclopedia—he knew everything about the sport, from who did what trick to where it happened, and this was before the internet made that information easy to find. His knowledge came from being there, living and breathing skateboarding every day. Years later, Aaron became a professional skateboarder for ATM, inspiring countless others with his skill and dedication.
About three years ago, Aaron began struggling with early onset dementia. The disease took a major toll on every part of his life, and he eventually had to move to a specialized facility. Visiting him, it was clear he recognized the love around him, even if he couldn’t always respond. On one visit, we played his "Wacha Ma Call It" part, and as soon as he heard the song, he started to nod his head to the beat, reacting with sounds and smiles. Sadly, on Thursday, January 22nd, Aaron’s battle with dementia came to an end, and he passed away. We find comfort in knowing he is skating in paradise with his sister and brother by his side.
This GoFundMe will help Aaron’s family with final expenses and a memorial that a legend deserves. His influence and personality will live on in all our hearts, and thanks to the internet and many great filmers, future generations will know the tricks Aaron did. Please contribute to this fundraiser to help Aaron’s family with final expenses and to honor his memory.
