My name is Sara, and I have been blessed to know and love this family for more than 25 years—first as a friend of their daughter beginning in 1999, and then becoming part of the family myself in 2001 as their daughter-in-law. Over the years, they have become so much more than my in-laws; they are truly family in every sense of the word.

Our family has experienced a loss that is difficult to put into words. We recently said goodbye to my father-in-law, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend who meant so much to so many people.

After more than three years of courageously fighting cancer, he passed away at 71 years old. Through everything he faced, he rarely complained and continued to be the same loving, funny, reassuring person we all knew. Some of his final words to his wife were, “It will all be okay.” Those words are especially meaningful now as she begins navigating life without the man who stood beside her for 49 years.

They had just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on July 5. They built a life together filled with family, faith, laughter, and so many memories. Losing your husband and best friend after nearly five decades together is a heartbreak none of us can truly make easier.

What we can do is surround her with love and try to lessen some of the burdens that come with such an unexpected and difficult transition.

We are raising funds to help with his cremation and final expenses, as well as some of the immediate bills she will face as she adjusts to becoming a widow and living on one income. Our hope is simply to give her a little breathing room so that, during these first difficult weeks and months, she can focus on grieving, healing, and taking things one day at a time rather than worrying about finances.

We find comfort in knowing that he is now in the arms of our Lord and Savior, probably fishing and singing, and that the love, laughter, wisdom, and memories he gave us will remain with our family forever. ❤️
