Help Us Honor TJ – A Beloved School Therapy Dog Facing His Final Chapter
For the past eight years, Lone Dell Elementary School in Arnold, Missouri has been home to one of the most special staff members to ever walk its halls. Not a teacher or administrator, but a gentle, loving German shepherd named TJ. As a therapy dog, TJ has brought calm, comfort, and compassion to hundreds of students, particularly those in special education teacher Brett Walters’ classroom. Now, TJ is facing his toughest battle yet, one he won't win, but we are hoping you can help us give him the farewell he deserves and continue the work he started.
In February, TJ was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive and incurable cancer of the blood vessels. Despite the heartbreak, Brett and his wife, Julie, immediately chose to fight for him. They’ve already spent thousands of dollars on surgery to remove the cancer, and they’ve continued treatment with chemotherapy and medication, determined to give TJ as many joyful days as possible.
TJ was given months to live and somehow, he has kept going. He’s still here, defying the odds and still walking the school halls with the same quiet strength and gentle heart that have made him a lifeline for so many students. TJ isn’t just a pet. He’s a calming force for children in emotional distress. He’s helped students overcome meltdowns that no teacher could reach. He’s changed lives by simply being there; quiet, kind, and full of unconditional love. His presence in the classroom has transformed the way children cope, learn, and grow.
On March 14, the entire school lined up for a farewell parade in his honor. He received treats, a hero’s cake, and love from every corner of the building. That day captured who he was to the community: a true hero with four paws and a giant heart.
Now, as TJ nears the end of his journey, we’re asking for your support. We want to:
- Cover TJ’s ongoing medical care and make his final months as comfortable as possible
- Help with the debt Brett and Julie have taken on to fight for him. Thankfully, they had pet insurance but it only covers a portion and is over the maximum coverage.
- Assistance with the cost of TJ’s passing when the time comes
- Support the Walters family in adopting and training a new therapy dog to carry on TJ’s legacy
Brett and Julie never expected the impact TJ would have when they brought him home as a pup. But what he has given to students, staff, and an entire school community, is immeasurable.
If you’ve ever had a dog change your life or seen one change someone else’s, you know how deep this bond runs. Please help us give back to the dog who has given everything to others.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your love, prayers, and support.
