Honor the Legacy of Blanche & Joseph Ely

Ms. Blanche Ely and her husband, Joseph Ely, dedicated their lives to educating Black students in the Jim Crow South. In 1951, Mrs. Ely started the first all-Black school for girls, and her husband became principal at Dillard High School, the only other all-Black school in Ft. Lauderdale. Mrs. Ely grew her school to include both girls and boys, hiring and mentoring Black teachers—many of whom she taught herself. The school was eventually renamed Blanche Ely High School, which still stands today. Their home is now a museum, and the street is named Blanche Ely Blvd. Their impact is woven into the fabric of Pompano Beach, touching countless lives, including my own family. My mother, a 1964 graduate, was so proud of her connection to Mrs. Ely that she requested all six of her children place their Blanche Ely High School diplomas in her casket. During homecoming week, thousands return to celebrate, showing just how deep the Elys’ influence runs.

Recently, while visiting my parents' gravesite, I stumbled upon the Elys' resting place. I never knew where they were buried, and when I found it, the marker was dilapidated and truly a sad sight. I couldn't leave it that way—I cleaned it up and placed orange and green flowers as a tribute. When I shared this on social media, the response was overwhelming. Many thanked me, and others suggested that each class should adopt the marker yearly. Some agreed it was time for an upgrade.

THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION FOR ALL POMPANONIANS! A NEW MARKER is needed for Mr. & Mrs. Blanche Ely. Now, I’m asking for your help to give Ms. Blanche Ely and Joseph Ely the recognition they deserve. The funds raised will go toward a new, more substantial marker to honor their legacy. Whether you’re a former student, teacher, or community member, your support—no matter the amount—will help us create a lasting tribute to two remarkable educators who shaped our community. Thank you for helping us honor their memory.
