A RING FOR OUR CHAMPIONS
OUR 1982 CHEYNEY LADY WOLVES BASKETBALL TEAM ARE 2024 WOMENS BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES.

We are Cheyney University Alumni, Tina Payne 84” and Ray Jones 83”. We are members and past Executive Officers in the Metro Atlanta Cheyney University Alumni Association. We were at Cheyney State College of PA that became Cheyney University of PA in 1983. We were in Cope Hall gymnasium during those historical moments in time when the dominate 1982 Cheyney Lady Wolves headed to the D1 Women’s Championship game. 42 yeas later the 1982 Lady Wolves were inducted in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as Trailblazers of the Game. The team received lapel pins (which is normal) while the other individual inductees received WBHOF RINGS. We want to present the Team Rings in October 2024 at Homecoming . MAKE IT HAPPEN with your DONATION .

Below is the Backstory …… HERSTORY:

OUR 1982 CHEYNEY STATE COLLEGE LADY WOLVES JOURNEY ;
Our Cheyney Team is the only Historically Black College and University(HBCU) to have won a women’s or men’s National Collegiate Athletic Conference/ Regional Championship. Our Lady Wolves did it in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament on February 27th, 1982 , by crushing Slippery Rock State College 92-33 after just one day earlier having demolished Millersville College 114-37. Our Cheyney Team took a 23 game winning streak, which included victories over such Division 1 national powerhouses such as North Carolina State University, Kansas State University, University of Maryland, and Auburn University into a National Championship Game. Furthermore, our Cheyney Team was part of a dynasty that had gone undefeated at home in the infamous Cope Hall gymnasium for four consecutive seasons. Our Cheyney Team played in the first NCAA Division 1 Women’s National Championship Game ever, which occurred March 28, 1982.

Our superheroes on this historic Cheyney Women’s Basketball Team are as follow: Paulette Bigelow, Lena Dabney, Karen Draughn, Sandra Giddens, Rosetta Gifford, Yolanda Laney (All-Tournament Team), Ann Strong, Sharon Taylor, Debra Walker, Val Walker (All Tournament Team) and Faith Wilds. Our head coach and 2009 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame inductee C. Vivian Stringer and assistant coaches Ann Hill and Carlotta Schaffer. Others are our very own Cheyney Mascot Kyle D(Slice) Morris, Team Manager William Thomas El, Trainer Louise Conrad and Sports info Director William Morton.
