Imagine being 19 years old, wounded in battle, and returning 80 years later to the exact place it happened.
Meet Mr. Russell “Russ” Sattazahn, a 99-year-old World War II veteran and true American hero.
Russ was drafted into the Army in 1944 and trained at Camp Blanding, Florida. He served with the 1st Infantry Division, 18th Regiment, Company G—“The Big Red One.” He arrived in Europe on January 4, 1945, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
On March 24, 1945, in Ukerath, Germany, a German tank shell struck the building where Russ had taken cover. He lost his right arm and was wounded by shrapnel. His service ended that day. And for years never talked about it.
Why We Need Your Help
After nearly 80 years, two groups—The Rifle and Keeping History Alive—are taking Russ back to Ukerath for the first time since the war. This journey means everything to him—but we need help covering his airfare.
How You Can Support
Every donation helps cover Russ’s airfare, to go back to the place where his life changed forever.
No amount is too small. Your support honors a living WWII veteran and keeps history alive.
From Russ and all who love him—thank you
