Honor Ras Wadadah Selassie's Legacy

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Ras Wadadah Selassie on December 31st, 2024, also known as John Wesley Stevens. He was a man of great strength, wisdom, and kindness, whose presence touched the lives of many. Ras Wadadah Selassie was an amazing artist, a Korean War veteran, a Master Shifu in Kung Fu, member of the Dogon Community, member of the Black Panther Party and an extraordinary father, grandfather, and friend. His infectious energy and soulful presence inspired all who knew him, fostering a deep love and compassion that touched everyone around him. In the last moments with Wadadah Selassie, he fought and held on with much strength so he could reminisce by telling stories, making us laugh and to make sure to tell his loved ones to do the right thing and be who you truly are! Although it was bitter sweet, he reassured us that he will always be here and we will feel his energy. As a family, we are committed to honoring his final wishes. In honoring Wadadah’s final wish to “go out in style,” he will be laid to rest with full military honors in a beautiful cemetery, where his loved ones can visit and celebrate his life.
