I held her and whispered, "I love you, I love you, I love you." Then I promised my beautiful, soon-to-be-bride that I would do my best to keep her spirit, love, and science alive as she passed on to the next experience.

My name is Trevor Huffman, and I was Natalia Duque-Wilckens's life partner. We were going to be married in Chile with all our closest friends and family on January 20th, 2026 (and another wedding party at Torch Lake, Michigan that summer), before her tragic accident happened.

For those of you reaching out to me and my Huffman/Duque-Wilckens family, thank you. Thank you for sharing your love with us. Thank you for being her (and our) friend. Thank you for reaching out to share her stories about how she loved and cared for people, animals, colleagues, and nature in ways that most people don't. Your stories mean so much.

For those of you who loved, met, worked, or were taught by Natalia, please share this story so we can continue to push her science and love for the most meaningful things in life forward.

I cannot fathom living without her presence, her gigantic smile, her soft hands, her endless love and curiosity, and her passion for understanding how to create a more compassionate world for nature, animals, and humans. For those of you who were in her circle, know that her love for you was real. Realer than anything.

I am at a loss right now. I do not understand why this tragic accident happened, but I do know that I can continue her passion for nature, science, and animals with you all by starting and sharing her legacy.

Her name deserves to be remembered, not just for how much she did, but for how much she loved all of you. She taught me how to love. She taught me loyalty. She showed me what loving unconditionally means.

Please keep her spirit alive in everything you do. I promise you I will do the same. And thank you all for being so kind and supportive to me in this time of loss. Remembering Dr. Natalia Duque Wilckens: A Legacy of Brilliance, Love, and Empathy

We are creating this GoFundMe page to build a lasting legacy through a scholarship at NC State in loving memory of Dr. Natalia Duque Wilckens, a truly incandescent soul who passed away too soon. Natalia was a phenomenal person—a brilliant Professor of Biological Sciences at NC State University, a devoted partner to her loving fiancé, Trevor, and a cherished daughter and sister whose roots stretched back to her childhood and family in Chile.

A Light in Academia and Life

Although her tenure at NC State was brief, Natalia’s presence and impact were immediate and profound. She was admired by students and colleagues alike for her intellect, passion, and genuine care. As one friend shared: " She was brilliant and an inspiring mentor. Her presence and impact on science will be greatly missed." Another noted that she was "one of the kindest professors I've ever encountered and was so passionate and excited about her research."

Natalia had a rare gift: "Serious one second, goofy the next. She was thoughtful, creative, and breathtaking. I’ll miss our dialogues and her random silliness to no end." She brought joy and contemplation into every space she entered. She was the kind of friend who “thrived on long and deep conversations, staying up late to talk about everything under the sun."

One friend beautifully recalled her generosity upon arriving in a new city:

"She brought me in, cooked for me, and made me feel at home... I called her my sister for a couple of years... We played music together, we shared time together, and we cried together. She meant so much to me."
