Honor Kennie Smith: Veteran, Leader, Friend

Kennie Smith was a proud US Veteran and a dedicated member of Spartan Recovery at UNC Greensboro. His journey to sobriety began on December 18, 2017, a milestone he celebrated in the ICU surrounded by fellow Spartans who supported him every step of the way. Kennie’s commitment to recovery was unwavering, and he became a leader among both traditional and non-traditional students at Spartan Recovery, always willing to share his story to inspire hope in others.

In May 2025, Kennie graduated from UNC Greensboro with a bachelor’s degree in social work. His dream was to use his education and experience to help other veterans struggling with substance use disorder, ensuring they knew where to find support. Kennie’s impact on the recovery community was profound, and he leaves behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and service.

Sadly, Kennie passed away without family resources to cover the expenses of burial. While the Veterans Administration offers some burial benefits, it does not cover the cost of cremation. We are seeking support to raise the funds needed for his cremation and to schedule a graveside service with full military honors at the National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. Any funds raised beyond these expenses will go toward a scholarship for veterans in recovery at UNCG, helping others continue the journey Kennie started. We invite the recovery community and all who knew Kennie to join us in honoring his memory and ensuring his legacy lives on.
