The John family has been incredibly moved by the outpouring of love, prayers, and kind words from the community at the news of Joe John’s passing. In lieu of flowers, the John family would like to request your consideration in donating to the “Joltin’ Joe” fund in his honor.

Initial funds will be used to help pay for one of Joe’s wishes: to be buried at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetary on campus at UNC Chapel Hill, which requires a significant financial commitment from his family.

If you knew Dad, you probably know he was an avid UNC Tarheel fan. He nearly never missed a game and has celebrated many Tarheel victories over the years from the stadium seats at Kenan, court-side at the Dean Dome, or from his favorite recliner at home. He was a 3-time alumni of Carolina (BA ‘60, MA ‘67, JD ‘71).

One of his end-of-life wishes was to be laid to rest in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetary on the UNC campus. The Old Cemetary sits next to the UNC School of Government and UNC athletic facilities. It is close enough to Kenan Stadium that he can still hear the roar of the crowd on Saturdays as the Heels take the field (to beat Duke, of course), a perfect resting spot for him. The location will allow his family to honor and visit him regularly when attending UNC events in years to come.

Additional funds will also be used as the endowment of the Joltin’ Joe Foundation that will be created in his honor, working to support those who share the call to public service.
