It is with great sadness that I share that my friend and colleague, Mr. Harry Childers, lost his fight with cancer on Friday, November 21st, 2025. Harry was a tutor at the University of North Georgia, starting at what was then Gainesville Junior College at least 25 years ago, though his stories indicated he may have been involved with the institution before his permanent hire. Harry was a phenomenal tutor, employee, colleague, mentor, and friend and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Harry never lost hope during his fight with cancer, and, as such, did not finish a will. This will, of course, lengthen the time it will take for his mother, Betty Smith (his next of kin, and one of only a few surviving family members), to receive any financial relief from his assets. Miss Betty will need our help in order to plan for Harry's final arrangements and to provide the service she would like to offer for his friends and colleagues to be able to honor his life. She is hoping to be able to take care of these arrangements sometime during the first week of December, so our quick response will be key to securing this service and this space to honor our friend. In my last few visits before Harry's passing, he made it clear to me that his biggest concern was not adding worry or burden to his mother's life. I made a promise to him to help mitigate the stress on her in any way I could as he navigated his recovery. Despite his journey ending differently than we had planned, I will keep my promise to my friend and see what I can do to keep the financial burden from worrying her. As a retiree on a fixed income, these unexpected expenses can be overwhelming, to say the least. Let's make sure that Miss Betty has the peace of mind to focus on processing the grief of the loss of her precious son and doesn't have to postpone his memorial service until the legal system's slow-moving wheels grant her access to any remaining assets Harry may have had after the medical bills and missed work. Please help in any way you can, and please share this request broadly to reach as many of Harry's friends and former colleagues as possible. We know that Harry had a huge impact on many lives in our community and that there are likely hundreds who would like to show respects or make a gift of gratitude for the live he lived and the work he did.
