Mr. Connolly was a Marine Corps sergeant in the 1st division, 5th battalion, H/S Company in An Hoa, Vietnam for 18 months in 1968-1969. This go fund me is to help Daniel’s daughter Cat accompany him on a Kansas Honor Flight to Washington D.C., May 3-5, 2017.
Each veteran must be accompanied by a caregiver in order to participate.
Because Cat and her twin Keely are a package deal, Keely will be accompanying a Korean War veteran, Mr. Richard Leshure on the same flight. To save costs, Cat and Keely will room together and their hotel room with adjoin the room Mr. Connolly will share with Mr. Leshure was a Navy seaman stationed on the U.S.S. Vulcan as a cook and boatswains mate in crash fire rescue from March 1954 to January 1958.
This has been a difficult year for the Connolly family. Daniel has stage 4 esophageal cancer which has metastasized to other organs. He has valiantly worked through 3 series of chemotherapy and is on a 3 month recovery break. Enter what his wife Julie describes as a blessing. Kansas Honor Flights, a grassroots organization, supports veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam in travelling to Washington D.C. to be recognized for their service. Veterans and their caregivers fly to Washington D.C. stay in a hotel, visit the war memorial recognizing the service of each veteran, are honored at a banquet and showered with love letters from family, friends, and fellow veterans welcoming them home and thanking them for their service. During the banquet, they are honored with entertainment, including a medley of songs from each era. When they arrive back at the Wichita airport, they will be welcomed by family and friends grateful for their service.
While the veterans’ expenses are fully covered by donations to Kansas Honor Flights, the expenses of their caregivers are not. Direct costs are $750 for travel expenses including transportation, hotel, meals, etc. and a recommended $250 for any needs the veterans may have beyond what is covered by Kansas Honor flights.
As Daniel's wife of 31 years and Cat and Keely's mama, I am launching this go fund me from our home in Wichita, Kansas to help my husband and our daughters on this very important journey. Please help our girls honor their dad and have a special moment with him that they will cherish. Please help us fund this very important trip!
