In Loving Memory of Cesar Daniel Guajardo

January 20, 1948 – July 25, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved father Cesar, who left this world on July 25, 2025. He was a devoted husband, father of seven, proud grandfather to sixteen grandchildren and one great grandson. He loved his family deeply and made countless sacrifices throughout his life to provide and protect those he cherished.

Cesar was born at Los Ramones Ranch in Monterrey, Mexico, the youngest of three siblings—and the last to survive. A man of strength and resilience, he bravely fought through his final nine months, a period that allowed him to be surrounded by the love of his children and family.

Our Father’s Legacy

Cesar began his life in Monterrey, where he worked as an engineer at a local steel plant before migrating to Chicago in pursuit of a better future for his family. He remained undocumented for many years. In 1989, after immigration amnesty, his brother was able to petition him. From 1991 on, we began making summer trips to Mexico—something he cherished. Cesar would commute tirelessly—driving 28 hours straight from Chicago to Monterrey, sometimes without food, sustaining himself with jalapeños that hung from his rearview mirror to stay awake as the family traveled to Mexico.

In the U.S., Cesar dedicated himself to the steel industry for 38 years, working at plants including LTV Steel, Midlothian Steel, Inland Steel, Yankee, and others in South Chicago and Indiana. He often worked grueling hours, sometimes 7 days a week—but never complained. He even designed a prototype oven for one of the companies in the 1980s, though he was never credited.

After retirement, he moved to Brownsville, Texas, where he cultivated lemon trees, papayas, avocados, peaches, pomegranates, and connected to the land with the same dedication he gave to his work and family. He traveled back and forth to visit his family in Illinois.

Cesar had many passions, but nothing brought him more joy than his grandchildren. He was an incredible fisherman, known for catching salmon and large fish—some up to 3 feet long—from Lake Michigan. Whether it was sailing in winter or casting lines from Lakeshore Drive in the fall, he loved teaching his grandchildren how to fish and passed countless life lessons along the way.

One of Cesar’s greatest values was family unity. He believed meals should always be shared and that family must always support one another. These values live on in all of us.

Honoring His final wish

Our family is seeking to raise $20,000 to fulfill Cesar’s final wish—to be laid to rest in Monterrey, Mexico, alongside his mother, father, and sister. Contributions will support funeral and travel expenses, allowing us to bring him home.
