Remembering Casey Watkins
The Florida Keys community is heartbroken by the passing of our dear friend, Casey Watkins. On September 27, Casey suffered a sudden stroke and was taken to the ICU. He fought bravely for his life, but on Monday, September 29, he went into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. In his final moments, he was surrounded by loved ones, including his partner, Megan, his father, and a dear pastor who prayed over him. His passing came far quicker than anyone could have imagined, leaving family, friends, and the entire community in shock and grief.
Friends remembering Casey shared these words:
“He was such a magical person whose smile and joy brought happiness to anyone who talked with him. The world of anyone who knew him is less light now without him here. He made me smile and laugh anytime I was around him. Such a carefree soul with so many ideas to make the world a better place. His Casey antics and laughable charm will be how I remember him forever.”
From Megan, his beloved partner:
“I love Casey so fiercely! More than I ever imagined I could feel for another human. He is my rock, my foundation, my best friend and partner in crime, always ready for an adventure. He is my joy and hope, even in the challenging times. Especially in those because we learned how to grow from those experiences, each of us worked on healing our inner wounds while learning to be better, stronger as individuals and together.
Casey is the one person that made me feel seen, he allowed me to find and be my most authentic self. The big and bright and filled-with-energy Casey everyone saw in public, he was that same person at home. And he made me feel so safe in my own brain and skin. I was never too weird or too out there for him. He followed my crazy thought patterns and played with them, expanding and elaborating on them. He always bragged about my ‘big beautiful brain,’ but he also had a very deep intellectual ability himself.
I thought we’d be together for the rest of our lives into old age. I am completely devastated by this. Our entire future and all of our big plans to improve our communities and to do good for others have disappeared, vanished without warning or advance notice.
He loved his family, friends, his staff, his communities with nothing held back. If you were lucky to be one of his people (which was everyone) you knew you mattered. For Casey, it didn’t matter who you were or what you could offer him. He simply loved every single person he met and he made sure that in that moment of interaction, you were the only person that mattered in the world. If we remember nothing else, I hope we all remember how genuine his love was and that we can honor him by ‘loving like Casey.’”
Casey was a beacon of joy, kindness, and selflessness. He loved with his whole heart, and his legacy of light and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
This GoFundMe has been created by Megan Scallan’s colleagues to support her as she faces the unimaginable loss of her beloved partner. Casey was the primary provider, and alongside the heartbreak of losing him so suddenly, Megan now faces overwhelming medical bills, funeral expenses, and the costs of daily living.
Your generosity will help carry Megan through this devastating season—allowing her time to grieve, to heal, and to begin piecing together life without Casey.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. Thank you for honoring Casey’s memory by standing with Megan and showing her the same love and generosity that Casey so freely shared with everyone he met.
Let us all remember him by continuing to “love like Casey.”
