My name is James A. Young, U.S. Army Veteran. My friend, William “Bill” Morey, was also an Army Veteran. We served our community together through the American Legion Post 534 in Mayodan, NC, where Bill was the Director of our Riders group and I served as Assistant Director. Together, we worked to support veterans, their families, and local children—especially raising funds to provide bikes for kids at Christmas.
On July 22, Bill and I responded to a welfare check for a young mother with two small children escaping an abusive marriage. When we arrived, we didn’t see anyone home, but soon spotted the abuser’s vehicle approaching. Bill got out to speak with them. Without warning, the driver opened fire with a .45 caliber handgun, striking Bill multiple times. Bill died instantly in the road—protecting others, as he always had.
I was frozen, trapped in the truck, watching in shock. By the grace of God, I escaped and was able to contact authorities. The man was arrested about an hour later, but not before previously taking the life of his wife and my best friend.
Bill’s courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. In his honor, I am continuing our mission—to help children in need and to support women and children escaping abuse. This fund will provide bikes for kids, safe places for families in danger, and other assistance for those in crisis.
Your donation will help us continue Bill’s legacy of service, kindness, and protection. Thank you for honoring him and helping those who need it most.
May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.
