Homer Norris Archeology Project

Donation protected
Homer Norris was a beloved historian and artist in Parker County who died in October 2018 at the age of 89, and he was my dad. Many don't know Homer significantly furthered the archeological record of prehistoric peoples of Parker County, specifically Aledo and the Annettas. Homer carefully excavated and recorded more than 15 archeological sites with the state of Texas.  Two of the most prominent (along with the North Texas Archeological Society) are the Red Ochre Burial Site (41PR12), which contained ceremonially buried human remains, and the Grace Bison site (41PR20), which was a ceremonially buried bison (presumed albino by the way it was butchered and buried.) The Grace Bison remains are now at the Doss Museum in Weatherford. The red ochre burial remains, which consist of two young men, one with arrow points found in his chest, painted with red ochre before burial, have been at the Smithsonian for 35 years! Due to recent interest in Homer's archeological work and a publication on Homer's Aledo sites they have been given a full study over the last year. The North Texas and Texas Archeological Societies have excavated at two sites, with interesting new finds to curate and we plan to publish the results. And we now have a team under Gloria Elam applying for two historical markers in Aledo/Annetta, which cost $1800 each plus the cost of mounting them on metal poles. We have a third historical marker planned next year! Homer's art, writing, and archeological work are all love letters he left to this community. He would be very proud to know his life's work is being valued and carried to the next step. We appreciate any donation of any size. Your gift will be carefully used to help Aledo and Annetta become a greater part of Texas archeological history.
