Homeless, Seriously Ill, and Running Out of Time

For the past several months, my friend Pete has been homeless and living out of his car—not because of laziness or lack of effort, but because serious, untreated health issues took everything from him. Pete has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, which causes extreme fatigue and painful fluid buildup in his feet and legs. Living in his car makes it nearly impossible for him to rest properly or elevate his legs, worsening the swelling and putting further strain on his health.

While working as a car salesman, Pete’s illness caused him to fall asleep in the middle of conversations with customers, leading to job loss after job loss through no fault of his own. He has done everything people expect—repeatedly trying to access public assistance and medical services—but too often he’s met with long waits, confusing requirements, and being passed from one place to another without real help. Even so, Pete keeps showing up, advocating for himself, and trying again.

I’m sharing Pete’s story because I know the man behind the hardship. Pete grew up in Watervliet, New York, and although he moved to Florida years ago, many of us who know and care about him—including myself—are still in upstate New York. That distance makes it harder to provide hands-on help, but it doesn’t lessen our concern or our desire to support him. Watching someone with this much determination struggle just to survive has been heartbreaking, and I couldn’t stand by without trying to help.

Pete has no family to rely on. He lost his parents at a young age and has carried himself through life largely on his own. He’s been through more than most, and time and again he has found a way to bounce back and get back on his feet without help. But this time is different. His health, housing, and ability to work are all connected, and he cannot overcome this alone.

Pete’s goal is simple and deeply human: to get the medical care he needs, stabilize his health, and return to work so he can once again provide for himself. Donations will help cover temporary safe housing, medical expenses, prescriptions, food, and transportation to medical appointments. Even something as simple as a safe place to rest and elevate his legs would make a real difference in his health and recovery. Through it all, Pete has found his faith, which keeps him moving forward with resilience, hope, and a smile—even on the hardest days.

This is where we can help. If you’re able to donate, please know that no amount is too small—every contribution brings Pete closer to safety, healing, and independence. If you can’t donate, sharing Pete’s story is just as meaningful. Distance may separate us, but compassion doesn’t. Please consider giving or sharing today and help someone who has always helped himself finally get the help he truly needs.
