Home Modification Expenses and Medical Bills

Hi, my name is Sara Gillum. I created this GoFundMe to help my aunt, Linda Martin, pay for needed home modifications and cover medical expenses related to a recent injury. On January 17th Linda fainted and fell while at home. When she came to she discovered she had severely broken and dislocated her ankle. She has had surgery and has been told she will have to have her ankle completely non weight bearing for at least 10-12 weeks. Since her initial surgery, she has been in a wonderful rehab unit at Brookside in Overbrook, KS. However, despite her doctor saying she needs at minimum three more weeks at the rehab unit, and ideally she should stay there until she is able to begin putting some weight on her ankle again, her insurance will not pay for her to stay longer.

Linda is unable to use crutches or a knee scooter, and has difficulty using a walker due to a previous wrist fracture, so will mostly be wheelchair bound and unable to use stairs during her recovery. We her family are now left with 72 hours to make important home modifications, as her home is not accessible for the use of a walker and wheelchair. She will need grab bars, a hospital bed rental, a temporary ramp for her front door, a shower transfer bench, etc.

Linda does have Medicare and supplemental insurance, so we are hoping the medical bills will not be too terrible. If she finds herself with funds in excess of expenses related to her injury, they will be diverted to help with the care of her son, who is very ill and also going through an extremely difficult time. To protect his privacy I will not go into detail about those struggles. Linda is a beloved member of her family and her church. She is an honorary grandma to my children, and she is a retired elementary school teacher who is remembered fondly for her 30 years of service to the McLouth School District. She is in need of a hand up and I am hoping we can all come together to help her out.
