July 8 Flood Damage in Arlington (Columbia Pike)
Donation protected
I woke up on July 8th 2019 with the Flash Flood warning in Arlington, VA buzzing on my phone. With some concern, I dutifully woke up and proceeded to get ready for work. In the meantime, the sky turned ominous and it started pouring. My only thoughts were that it’s going to be a tough commute to work.
As I was about to leave, I observed the water seeping in through the patio doors. Hurriedly, I started to move stuff around but within minutes the force of the flooding water, pushed the patio door off the railing and I had a deluge.
I stood there, helplessly, watching over 2 feet of water inundate the apartment. Shocked, confused and saddened by the state of it, I could only say to myself that it’s all gone... it’s all gone...
In its current dilapidated state, even the most pleasant memories of the 2 years I spent here in the apartment continue to haunt me. I keep wondering, will it ever be the same again? However, as I jostle through this and empty the apartment for the repairs to begin, the extent of damage compounds everyday.
In addition to the flooring/drywall damage and storage expenses, I now have personal electronics, washer dryer, closets etc. also needing replacement or repair. My homeowners insurance did not cover me for flood damage as the area is not a designated flood plain.
I was hesitant to start this page, as growing up I was taught never to pity oneself and to hold one’s self esteem high in troubling times. I still abide by those values but this situation is different.
You will all understand that a home is more than bricks and mortar... it is memories and moments that one creates. I would appreciate all your help at this stage.
