I'm asking for your help to restore a teenage boy's faith in humanity.
Many of you know that 10 months ago my nephew was shot multiple times at point blank range, with a 45 caliber handgun, in a home invasion robbery. They intended to leave no witness alive. They left him laying on the living room floor with blood pouring from gunshot wounds all over his torso.
Only by the grace of God, Griffin is alive. One of the bullets ripped through his ribcage, tore through both lungs, shattered vertebrae in his spine and severed his spinal chord. Griffin was only weeks away from graduating high school early.
He awoke in the ICU days later in unbearable pain, on a ventilator, with tubes in his nose, throat, chest and back, and unable to feel or move his legs or feet. We broke the news to him that he was paralyzed from the waist down. He responded with two words, "kill me". It would take a novel to tell you the emotional and physical trauma he endured but overcame through the next several months.
Griffin has fought the battle of his life. He is our hero. He works incredibly hard in therapy, works hard at building his upper body strength and has found a love for hand peddle bicycling. The bicycle is "his legs". It gives him the freedom to be outside and enjoy nature like he always had.
In June our family all pitched in and surprised him with his own hand bike. Horribly, a few weeks ago someone cut the chain and stole his bicycle along with his faith in people. There are no words to describe an individual who would do this to a handicapped person. Griff has been trying so hard and doing ALL the right things and this was a big blow to him.
We're asking for any donation amount to go toward buying him a replacement hand bike. We'd also like to surprise him with a beach wheelchair so that he can enjoy the ocean again. But equally important, we're asking for your help in restoring his faith in humanity. We want him to see that there are many good people in the world who care. We want him to keep fighting and we want him to keep doing the right things.
