Home for Nakoda; I am creating a fund in hope to support Nakoda’s medical expenses etc so that he can join my herd of healing horses.
Nakoda came in from Alberta back in September of 2020. He arrived at Second Chance Cheekye Ranch with four other beautiful paint horses, all of which have gone onto forever homes.
They had hoped for the same for this beautiful and curious boy but it became apparent that he had an injury that was causing him pain and discomfort.
The First Veterinarian exam and X-rays performed 3 weeks after his arrival at SCCR revealed severe fragmentation of the extensor process of the coffin bone in both the LF and RF feet and diagnosed him with Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) which can be very painful, cause deformities, inflammation and arthritis. Luckily for Nakoda it was diagnosed early.
OCD is a chronic condition that can be very painful if left untreated. OCD makes horses hooves deform due to inflammation and arthritis which makes riding impossible. OCD requires ongoing management and can get worst overtime. Nakoda is only 4 yrs old.

Nakoda also has other potential health concerns such as possibly a heart condition that will need to be properly diagnosed in the future.
The majority of people looking to adopt a horse are mostly wanting a sound and ridable one. Not a horse that needs medical attention. Given the severe nature of Nakoda’s condition; It is obvious Nakoda chances of finding a forever home are slim. I am willing to give him that chance.
As a volunteer at SCCR I had noticed Nakoda and had connected with him right away. I decided to take him under my wing.
It’s been many months now that I have been taking care of Nakoda with the support of Kris at Second Chance Cheekye Ranch. I have seen a huge improvement in Nakoda’s behaviour. And demeanour. He has been showing great improvement in his condition with all the natural remedies and conventional pain medication I have been offering him. He still has ways to go.
Nakoda has a heart of gold. I would like to offer him a home and the possibility of joining my herd and becoming a therapy horse.
