Home Care Visits for Linda

Donation protected
Linda Oluyemisi Rathbun was always the one who would go over and beyond for those she knew and loved.  She and her husband Richard always made time to help out, whether it be minding, or even temporarily housing, their friends' children; or hosting people who were visiting the Atlanta area in their home; or Linda providing hours to her church; or cooking her amazing, delicious food for friends' parties.

But late in 2016, and through 2017, Linda felt increasingly tired, and sometimes mentally or emotionally troubled, even off-balance.  She went from a diagnosis of Auto-Immune Hemolytic Anemia, to near renal failure, to Lupus Nephritis, to Stroke.  She suffered at least one major stroke on 5th January, 2018, and another smaller one the following week, while in Intensive Care at Emory Univ. Hospital.  These have rendered her left side dormant.  She spent 5 weeks in ICU, 5 more in a regular room, the next 4 weeks at one Rehab facility and the next 6 at another.

Linda cannot walk, or even stand unaided.  Her left side has not recovered to where it is useful for her, although she is making incremental progress in Physical and Occupational Therapy home visits, 2 OT and 2 PT each week, covered by insurance through the end of 2018.  Everything she does, including meals, requires either supervision or physical help.

Through it all, Richard has maintained the household and the two children, plus his full-time job, and managed to visit his wife at least 6 days each week.   Linda Oluyemisi is now home again, since 1st June.  But now Richard and the two kids (16 & 11) are responsible for Linda's personal care.  Richard is doubling as full-time care giver and full-time employee, and finding it not working very well.  Work hours and care hours together amount to about 16 each day, and Richard is usually finishing his employer's hours until 10 or 11 PM, having begun between 7 and 8 AM, interspersed with care, errands, taxi service for the kids, etc.

Our family faces several thousand dollars in uncovered costs, although we are ever so grateful for the insurance coverage that paid more than 90% of the hospital and rehab care.

We cannot afford to spend our insurance coverage on the personal care, as well as the PT and OT -- the daily personal care will use up all of the allowed visits well before her therapy can help her become more mobile again.  A month of good, reputable, personal care for 3 hours each weekday morning -- allowing Richard to work uninterrupted in the morning through lunchtime -- costs about $900 to $1200.   It's simply not in the budget.

Any money raised in this campaign will be set aside for the unpaid medical bills and the ongoing personal care.  The goal amount will pay the outstanding bills and also allow for personal care over the next 12 months.   We appreciate any efforts made on our behalf, and God Bless You all.
