Imagine the sadness in finding out that your father has terminal lung cancer with metastasis to the bones and then imagine finding out one month later that you have breast and thyroid cancer.
This is Holly's story.
In September of this year we learned that my father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Our grief was unexpectedly compounded when one month later, after finding a lump in her breast, my sister Holly was diagnosed with breast cancer. A PET scan two weeks later revealed unrelated thyroid cancer. Our world came crashing in on us without a warning.
On November 1st, Holly had a bilateral mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection of her left arm and the beginning of reconstructive surgery. 5 days later, on November 6th she underwent another surgery to remove her thyroid and place a port for chemotherapy. Holly is recovering and will return home before Thanksgiving to begin 9 months of chemotherapy and radiation and face her battle against breast and thyroid cancer. Reconstructive surgery will be completed once treatment is over. At the same time the Lyme Disease she has had for over 6 years will make this battle even more difficult.
We are not a family that asks for help. We are the helpers and the givers but we are asking for help for Holly. The financial impact of this illness is devastating. As a self-employed hair stylist her income is based on her ability to work and she will be unable to work for some time. She is not eligible for unemployment or disability. She is responsible for paying for her own health insurance and has received one of the now famous letters stating that she will be unable to keep her current health plan because it does not meet the requirements of Obamacare. She is covered under her plan until March 31, 2014. I am unsure of how this will turn out because no one can seem to give us answers.
Through your donations and with our help it is our hope that she can continue to pay for her current health insurance, co-pays, drugs and other medical and living expenses while she is unable to work. Our family and Holly's wonderful friends will work tirelessly to see her through this.
As we try to wrap our heads around having two members of our family diagnosed with cancer within a month of each other and struggle with our emotions and sadness of not being able to see our father during this time, we ask for your continued prayers for Holly and her daughter Summer and for my father, Bob Dunwoody, and my mom Joan and sister Nancy that are caring for him in South Carolina.
This is Holly's story and our family's story and it is a story that we read every day and cannot believe is real. Please help me help Holly and her daughter Summer.
