In July 2019, my only sister and best friend, Holly Gross (now 55) received terrible news; she has ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and there is no current cure.
The donations made to this Gofundme have helped us cover the astronomical medical costs, such as in-home nursing care, which neither insurance NOR Medicare covers for ALS patients. The estimated out of pocket expenses for ALS patients at this stage is $100K- $200K per year.
Anyone who knows Holly knows she is an amazing mother, wife and friend. She loves life and most of all her 2 sons - Jake (21) and Nicholas (18). To make things more difficult for the family, her husband Jim has been battling Parkinsons for more than 15 years.
ALS is terminal, and Holly's case has been very aggressive. In less than 2 years, we've watched this painful reality unfold. Holly had to stop working over a year ago.
As of November 2020, she can only communicate using an eyegaze machine, she receives all nutrition and medication through a feeding tube, has no use of her limbs, mobility is by wheelchair only - which she must be lifted in and out of, and she needs others to do most everything (dress, bathe, brush teeth).
We have a great network of volunteers, and Jake and Nicholas have been nothing short of amazing in helping with their mom daily, lifting her from bed to wheelchair to chair, still, she requires private nursing care to keep her safe and comfortable, as well as give the boys time to attend school, crew (NIcholas) and work. Nursing care is very expensive and again, not covered by insurance.
The finances have been hit hard and the expenses continue to skyrocket. We appreciate any contribution you can make!
