It’s That Time of Year to Spread Your Holiday Cheer!
MY STORY: A little over a year ago, I knew that something was missing from my life. Trying to figure out what it was, I read this quote from Winston Churchill: “We Make a Living by What We Get, But We Make a Life by What We Give.” I knew what I needed to do and that was to give back to those in need. This is when I met Jessie.
While at Target one Saturday afternoon, standing in line and getting frustrated at the slow moving cashiers, the smallest angel on this earth tugged on my shirt. Irritated, I turned around to find a little nugget of sunshine with a bald head, big bright eyes and huge smile looking up at me. She asked me a million questions and I came right back at her with mine. She was seven years old, battling cancer and had been released from Children’s National a week before I met her at Target. By the time I got to the cashier, I didn’t want to check out… I wanted to stay and talk to her... over a juice box… over Build-A-Bear… I didn’t care. Her little spirit made me forget about everything I was worried about, cared about or was frustrated about. She was everything that I was missing.
After meeting Jessie, as some of you may already know, I have been a Patient Care Volunteer at Children’s National. It’s been a year of meeting tons of kids with a spirit like Jessie's every weekend. Kids that might not even have a home to go to when they leave the hospital. Kids that are going through more pain than I can or want to ever imagine that hide it behind their smiles and laughs. Babies that I rock to sleep that just want to be held. Kids that have super hero strength and wisdom beyond their years. These amazing little humans have left an impact on me that will forever shape the way I live and think. I will never be able to give them anywhere close to what they have given me. But I can sure try... with YOUR HELP!
GIVE A SMILE: With your monetary donation, I will buy new and unwrapped toys, books and games (etc.) for children of all ages to donate to Dr. Bear’s Closet at Children’s National. With your thoughtful and generous support, this gift of giving will bring smiles, comfort and joy to so many children that truly need it the most during the holidays. Can you imagine spending the holidays in the hospital? Neither can I. One toy truly means the world to a child at Children’s National.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words how much your donation means to me but I do promise that I will take photos (with permission) of the smiles that your donations will bring to the kids at Children's National. It’s priceless.
THANK YOU!
Wishing you and yours a Happy and Healthy Holiday.
Xoxo,
Mel
