Like millions of children around the world these children live on about $1 a day . I started this campaign after being inspired by a little boy named Anderson.
Anderson was over playing at our house and I gave him a used pair of used flip flops because his were broken. I wish I had captured his reaction: a hug, a huge smile, and the flip flops were on his feet like glue for the rest of the day.
Simple gifts of clothing and necessary hygiene items make a huge difference to 'dollar a day' children. I have lived in Brazil for nearly 5 years and the country continues to combat extreme poverty. We have come a long way, but poverty still exists. Especially in rural areas, such as where I live in the state of Rondonia. Anderson inspired me to start this campaign to give 'dollar a day kids' some holiday cheer and support for the 2017 school year (our school year starts in January) and to bring the joy of giving to my family and friends.
For every $100 raised the following gifts will be purchased and delivered to 'a dollar a day' child in my city or a nearby rural village:
3 pairs of clothing
1 bath towel
1 pair of flip flops
Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Backpack and basic school supplies
1 simple toy
I am hoping that with the support of others, we can give a holiday kit to 24 children this year. This includes Anderson his 2 brothers and sister, who my family will support, plus 20 more. I will share the story of each child on this page and I hope everyone will enjoy following along.
I remember selecting a child's names from a tree at church each year when I was a child and buying this child a holiday gift, this was a great learning experience for me and I am now teaching my own children about poverty: how little things can make a big difference and how our own excess can fill someone else’s needs.
For anyone who is interested in learning about what it means to live on $1 a day this is a great resource and documentary: www.livingonone.org
Any donation makes a huge difference, even $5 buys a child a needed toothbrush and toothpaste. Anyone who would like to donate in place of a holiday gift to a member of our family, we gladly accept!
