Holding the Line: Visual storytelling for HIV advocacy
Donation protected
My name is Ben Eveslage, and for nearly a decade, my professional life has revolved around global HIV programs, specifically designing telehealth solutions to support communities in over 45 countries. Working closely with local advocates, healthcare providers, and communities deeply committed to ending HIV/AIDS has profoundly shaped my worldview and inspired my journey.
Then, in January 2025, everything changed abruptly. Massive and sudden funding cuts and stop-work orders from the U.S. government caused chaos, leaving countless communities without essential health services overnight. It was devastating—not just professionally, but personally. Colleagues lost their jobs, and those we supported suddenly faced a future filled with uncertainty.
In this moment of crisis, I realized I needed to do something different—something meaningful. Combining my lifelong passion for photography and my deep respect for frontline HIV advocates, I decided to launch an independent documentary photography project titled "Holding the Line." This summer, I'm traveling through Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, and Mauritius, documenting the powerful stories of resilience and hope amidst funding disruptions. My goal is to amplify the voices of those working tirelessly to sustain HIV services and support their communities despite tremendous challenges.
The photographs and stories captured during this journey will be shared widely and freely to amplify frontline voices and bolster the advocacy efforts of global HIV organizations. These outputs aim to support existing global awareness campaigns, inspire action, and underscore the urgent need for sustained support for global health initiatives.
Although I'm self-funding my travel and basic expenses, your contributions will help immensely with practical necessities to get these compelling photos and stories documented: Film rolls, development, and scanning (YES, this project incorporate both film and digital photography), and most importantly, some costs that will facilitate meaningful engagement with local advocates and organizations featured in this project. Every dollar will directly support the authenticity and impact of these critical stories.
This GoFundMe is meant primarily for individuals, such as friends, followers on social media, and others who feel compelled to support and stay engaged in this project. Please contact me if you would like to explore a larger contribution or sponsorship that can support dissemination and advocacy efforts resulting fro this project.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering supporting this effort. Together, we can highlight resilience, celebrate dedication, and ensure the global fight against HIV/AIDS continues with dignity and strength.
With gratitude,
