My name is Dhemimaela Romain. I am 35 years old, and I am a mother of five beautiful children who depend on me every single day.

I experienced something no mother, no woman, and no human being should have to go through. During an encounter with police, I was treated with a level of aggression that I believe was unnecessary, excessive, and deeply traumatic. What should have been a situation handled with calm communication and respect quickly escalated into something frightening and painful.

At first, I tried to move past what happened. I was bothered by how I was treated, but like many mothers, I focused on staying strong for my children and continuing forward. However, when the video of the incident began circulating online, it reopened that trauma in a way I was not prepared for. Watching it from the outside forced me to truly see how I was treated — and it broke my heart all over again.

In that moment, I was not treated like a person. I was not treated like a mother. I was not treated with dignity.

My children need me — not just physically, but emotionally. What happened has affected me in ways I am still trying to process, and reliving it publicly has only made that pain deeper.

I am now seeking legal support to hold those involved accountable. I also feel a responsibility to act because I understand that if this is not addressed, these same officers may treat other women — other mothers — the same way. No family should have to experience this kind of fear, pain, and humiliation.

This is not just about me — it’s about justice, accountability, and protecting others.
