Hello, my name is Camila Saunders and I am an 11th grader at the Germantown Friends School (GFS), in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Juniors at GFS are required to complete an unpaid internship in a field they are passionate about, or at the minimum, find extremely interesting. In accordance with this request, it is my desire to volunteer my service work at The Jaguar Rescue Center located in South Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.
Since my childhood, I have been interested in animal and environmental conservation. In lower school, I volunteered to participate in our school’s Environmental Action Club which taught us composting, planting, and how to positively impact the environment by recycling. I joined summer camps at multiple conservation centers to continue my understanding about preserving our environment. I attended zoo camp for 3 years. In my last year, I was a junior counselor handling and teaching younger campers about unique animals. Taking care of the environment and preserving life is truly my life’s passion. In addition to wanting to make a difference to the world around me, I also have a deep interest in learning about other cultures and their way of life. I currently speak fluent Spanish, can read and interpret Latin, and I have been studying Arabic for two years.
This experience in Costa Rica will continue my growth and exposure to animal and environmental conservation issues. Having the opportunity to work alongside other volunteers from around the world would be a dream come true.
