On January 30, Crystal Dawn Schmidt passed away unexpectedly. In a moment of time, my brother and I lost our mom; my dad lost his wife; and my grandmother lost her only daughter and primary caretaker. The death was sudden and has left our family shocked, reeling, and devastated. She would have celebrated her 55th birthday in less than a month, and our parents 30th wedding anniversary next year. Crystal was an amazing mother, daughter, wife, grandmother, and friend. She was a selfless woman who always put others before herself, even if that meant sacrificing her own time and plans. She will be missed by many but will always be in our hearts and next to us.
Our family was not prepared for this. Of course, no one is mentally prepared for something so sudden, but we were not financially prepared. My mom did not have a Life Insurance plan, nor any type of death benefit, pension, or savings. My dad had a string of unfortunate medical events from 2008 to 2012 that included a heart attack requiring open heart surgery, shortly followed by 2 strokes, 2 cancers, and an aortic aneurysm. He is still drowning in medical bills from this, and unfortunately the two of them never made it above water long enough to save up for an emergency fund.
My brother and I don’t have the funds to cover the funeral costs either. Khi has been dealing with illness for the past few months that have resulted in him losing his job. We are both willing to sell off goods that we own, but both know that is not what our mom would have wanted.
My family, my brother, and I are humbly asking for any help we can get to offset the costs of my mom’s passing. Any money raised will go towards the following in this order:
1. Direct Funeral Costs
2. Any other costs associated with my mom’s passing such as unpaid bills and settling affairs
3. Caretaker costs for our grandmother - Crystal was our grandmother’s primary caretaker and our family is now tasked with finding appropriate care and living arrangements for her.
4. Additional costs associated with living adjustments for our father.
We have learned that life is unfair, but we also know that people are kind. Our hearts are heavy today and it is our hope that some of the burden and weight will be alleviated by asking for help.
Any amount is greatly appreciated. We respect anonymity, but for those that don’t mind, we would like to get an address to send a thank you card for everyone's help in donations. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
