Who are we?

First and foremost, we are Mudders in solidarity with other Mudders. The HMC Solidarity Fund is a mutual aid fund to assist Harvey Mudd students most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our team of organizers consists of 17 students of all class years working remotely around the country. We intend to match as much of the unmet need in the HMC community as possible.

*Donations made to this fund are not tax-deductible.  This fund is not organized or administered by Harvey Mudd College (HMC) or by the Associated Students of Harvey Mudd College (ASHMC).*

Who are we aiding?
This fund will provide direct, timely assistance to students facing financial uncertainty due to the pandemic, including those whose family members have lost sources of income and are struggling to pay for essential needs such as housing, food, and medicine.
As of June 16th, over 20 students have submitted an interest form, of which:

60% are first generation or low income students
75% have family members who are essential workers
65% have lost a source of income for the summer
75% have family members who have lost a source of income
17% are facing housing insecurity
83% do not expect to receive a federal stimulus check

The funds will go towards housing (48%), utilities (52%), groceries/toiletries (74%), travel expenses (39%), and medical expenses (17%).

What about federal or college funding?
Although students may have received assistance from the federal stimulus program under the CARES Act, many students in need do not qualify for these funds and they might often be too little, too late.

How are we different from the other Claremont Solidarity Fund?
We are a separate fund designed to specifically address the needs of Harvey Mudd students.

How are we different from HMC Emergency response Fund?
HMC Emergency response Fund has mainly been used as emergency funding for faculty and staff. As it says in its description, this includes “salary support and financial aid as well as technology and supplies needed for classroom learning on- or off-campus during the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 academic years.”

What are other ways that I can support 5C students?
Students from Claremont McKenna College (Venmo @CMCMUTUALAID), Scripps College, and Pomona have organized their own mutual aid funds. In addition, the Claremont Solidarity Fund (Venmo @Claremont-Solidarity-Fund) is a joint fund that is shared among the funds run by Mudd, CMC, and Scripps students. Why provide a fund for Mudders at all?
The Harvey Mudd Mission statement states, “Harvey Mudd College seeks to educate engineers, scientists, and mathematicians well versed in all of these areas and in the humanities and the social sciences so that they may assume leadership in their fields with a clear understanding of the impact of their work on society.” As members of the Mudd community, we know what it’s like to struggle. We have supported each other as students learning side by side and now it is time to support those of us who are vulnerable to financial hardship. By contributing to this fund and raising awareness, you are not just helping someone in need. You are standing in solidarity with all students at Harvey Mudd College and we thank you for your support!

How does the fund work?
We are in the process of raising funding and gathering information on student needs. From the responses of the interest form, we have determined our total fundraising goal as $65,000. An FAQ on requests and distribution can be found here. Donations for the fund will be collected through our Venmo (@HMC-Solidarity) and GoFundMe. See the timeline below. We will announce any updates on our Instagram page!

Who can I contact with questions?
You can DM our Instagram page (@HMC-Solidarity) or email Yoni Maltsman at [email redacted].
