Hello, my name is Sergio Gutierrez, and I am the proud father of our soon-to-arrive baby boy, Nicolas Gutierrez.

We received news that has completely changed our world. Nicolas has been diagnosed with HLHS (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome), a severe congenital heart defect in which the left side of his heart did not develop properly. Because of this, he will need to undergo three open-heart surgeries, beginning just one week after birth. Each surgery will be a major hurdle for him and will require long, difficult recoveries.

Nicolas is expected to be born between late November and early December. Immediately after birth, he will be transferred to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he will stay in the NICU until his first surgery. His second surgery will take place when he is about 4–6 months old, and the final surgery is expected during his toddler years.

In addition to his heart condition, Nicolas has also been diagnosed with a cleft palate, which poses challenges with feeding—something especially critical as he prepares for major surgeries. While we don’t yet know the full extent of the reconstructive procedures he will need, we do know that they will be essential for his growth, nourishment, and long-term health.

As we prepare to walk this long and emotional road with our son, my wife and I will need to take extended time away from work to remain by his side. We are doing everything we can to stay strong in our faith and trust that God will protect our little warrior through every step of this journey. At the same time, we still need to keep our household running and provide for our 5-year-old daughter, Idalia. We will not have any form of consistent income during this hard time, and this is the reason for this GoFundMe as we do not know how 2026 will look for our family.

This is why I am reaching out—something that does not come easily for me. But in this moment, we humbly ask for help from anyone who feels led or able to support us. Your generosity will allow us to focus on Nicolas’s care without the added weight of financial stress.
