Cancer Connect Fundraiser

IN MEMORY OF SUE

Ellen (my daughter) and myself are planning to complete the Bantry 10K Bay Walk/Run, on Sunday 15th May 2016 and we hope to achieve the following;
- To raise funds for Cancer connect.
- To remember all of our family members and friends  who have passed away from Cancer.

When I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, part of my treatment was 37 sessions of radiotherapy travelling up to Cork Monday to Friday for 7 weeks. I decided to take the Cancer Connect bus up and down for that period of time. All the drivers were fantastic and I can't thank them all enough for all that they do to help and make one's journey with cancer that little bit easier. Cancer Connect has been in operation since 2011. Cancer Connect is a free, flexible and confidential service, that runs five days a week to Cork hospitals. The service is operated entirely by volunteer drivers.

During this short period of time the service has grown considerably and is now firmly established as a vital support for the many people who avail of the services to get to the Cork Hospitals for either Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy treatment. To date, over 11,500 passenger journeys have been recorded.

For chemotherapy,one of the services that Cancer Connect offers is an individual transport service. In this case, a Voluntary Driver in his/her own car calls to the Passengers house, and takes that person to the relevant hospital. We are very aware that appointments are in different hospitals/clinics, at different times, for different durations and might be much longer or shorter than anticipated. In every case, the driver waits until the passenger is ready to go home, and drives him/her to the door. Again, this is a free and confidential service, and supported hugely by our kind and caring (and amazing!) volunteers. Thankfully, I have full recovered and will always be very grateful to them for the support and help  during my treatment period.

Going through the this Cancer journey, I met various people travelling on the bus, and I became very friendly with one lady in particular who was on the same journey as myself and we became close. She was an amazing person, who always referred to me as "babes". I found her to be a very warm, bubbly person and we got on very well.

Regretably, my friend passed away last summer which was a big blow to me, so for this reason my daughter Ellen and myself would like to do this walk/run in MEMORY OF SUE, my wonderful friend and of all other family/friends who sadly have passed away due to Cancer.

There is no obligation for anyone to help out by donating money  but every Euro helps. Funds are greatly needed to continue with this service by helping out so many people which will make their journey with cancer just a little bit easier. Thank you for reading folks, feel free to like, share and DONATE.

Thank you very much.
